The South Lakes cover the well know villages of Windermere, Ambleside and Grasmere along side the towns of Kendal and Kirkby Lonsdale.
Kendal is host to castles, museums and historic bridges. It is the largest town in the South Lakes area and there is a train station in the town centre itself. There are walks from the centre of the town or starting in the villages and hills in the surrounding area. There is also a direct train link to Windermere.
Kirkby Lonsdale was recently transformed into the setting for the BBC drama Jamacia Inn. With lovely riverside walks and a church dating back to the Norman era it is a lovely place to visit. With coffee shops, restaurants and shops for all tastes.
Grange Over Sands is situated on the shores of Morecambe Bay. With a typical Edwardian seaside town feel, there are plenty of shops and eateries. There is a promenade which offer walking alongside the gardens and the estuary.
Hawkshead is a pretty village which offers an array of tea rooms, gift shops and guest houses. It is possible to walk directly from the village into the surrounding countryside and access to Grisdale Forest with the walking routes, mountain bike trails and visitor centre is easiliy accessable.

Surrounding the town is the gently rolling farmland of the Furness Peninsula. Along the seashore are some lovely coastal villages; Bardsea, Baycliff, Aldingham and Newbiggin, these all have stunning views over Morecambe Bay.

This Georgian town, situated on the west coast of Cumbria, was one of the first post-renaissance planned towns in the country. Built on shipping and mining, both industries have now declined, but Whitehaven is never-the-less an attractive town and is one of the 40 Gem Towns in England (the only other in Cumbria being Cockermouth).

Wigton is a market town in Cumberland, Cumbria, England. It lies just outside the Lake District. Wigton is at the centre of the Solway Plain, between the Caldbeck Fells and the Solway coast. It is served by Wigton railway station on the Cumbrian Coast Line.
Windermere is a large lake in Cumbria’s Lake District National Park, northwest England. It’s surrounded by mountain peaks and villages, including Bowness-on-Windermere, where The World of Beatrix Potter Attraction has modern displays on the children’s writer. In the north, trails lead to Orrest Head, a hill with views across the lake and the fells beyond, and Holehird Gardens, with their alpines, heathers and shrubs.
The lake is about half a mile down from the village, where you can hire boats and bikes from Coniston Boating Centre. There are shops, pubs and places to eat in the village, and a range of guest houses, B and Bs and holiday cottages in Coniston and nearby.
